Lens Culture is proud to be a partner once again with Paris Photo, the yearly European venue to discover the most current happenings in art photography from around the world.
This year’s event brings together 90 international art galleries and 13 publishers, showcasing work from more than 25 countries – with a special emphasis on photography from Central Europe.
As just a small preview of the wide range and eclectic mix, Lens Culture has produced a high-resolution slideshow of more than 340 of the images that will be featured this year.
Spotlight on Central Europe: Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic
Photography is one of Central Europe's richest forms of artistic expression. From the very beginning of the 20th century, Bratislava, Budapest, Prague, Ljubljana and Warsaw were home to an intellectual
avant-garde promoting a new vision of photography. Many artists from these cities revolutionized the history of photography, from André Kertész and Mohology-Nagy to František Drtikol, Josef Sudek, Brassaï and Robert Capa.
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the countries of the former Eastern Bloc have undergone a political, social and cultural revival. Photography remains the preferred language through which Central European artists express a new political and social reality, borrowing from diverse practices ranging from the visual and performing arts to documentary and subjective forms.
With work by more than 90 Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Slovakian and Slovenian artists, Paris Photo will offer an exceptional overview of the Central European scene, from the 1920’s avant-garde movements and the post-war years through to the most contemporary approaches. The Spotlight on Central Europe is curated by Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez.
Lens Culture FotoFest Paris 2010: International Photography Portfolio Review
We’re especially excited to announce that during the three days immediately prior to Paris Photo this year, Lens Culture and FotoFest Houston have organized
Lens Culture FotoFest Paris 2010, an international portfolio review that will bring together 40 photography experts from around the world, and 120 international photographers, for three days of intense one-on-one meetings and portfolio reviews.
An Open Portfolio Night will be open to the public on Tuesday, November 16, providing great exposure for the participating photographers, and allowing photography lovers and collectors to make some discoveries of their own.
Paris Month of Photography
All of this activitiy coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Mois de la Photo — a month-long event which turns Paris into the world’s capital of photography in November.
Major events include "Harry Callahan" at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, "André Kertész" at the Jeu de Paume, "Larry Clark" at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, " Steidl - L’Art du Livre" at the Monnaie de Paris, "Extrêmes" at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, "Des primitifs de la photographie: le calotype en France (1843-1860)" at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, "Heinrich Kuhn" at the Musée de l’Orangerie, and lots more.
So, November in Paris will be an extra special visual feast this year — a dream for art collectors, and total inspiration for photographers and visual artists.
The Paris Photo experience alone is such a concentrated jolt of visual/artistic input that we advise people to visit the fair for a few hours on each of the four days – pausing to take breaks to stroll the nearby Tuilerie Gardens, or to walk along the Seine, or to experience some of the many other photography-related events going on throughout Paris during its biennial Month of Photography.
