A look at contemporary creation in Iran

Ce livre présente un regard sur la création photographique aujourd’hui en Iran. Pour la première fois, une quarantaine de photographes iraniens se retrouvent réunis dans un ouvrage qui fait découvrir au lecteur occidental la pluralité et la vitalité d’une photographie artistique.

La photographie iranienne se caractérise par son degré d’engagement et sa dimension politique. Les démarches des artistes sont rarement neutres, et la plupart, à travers leurs images, veulent dénoncer des injustices sociales ou politiques, la censure, voire la réalité du quotidien.

Pour ces photographes soumis à des pressions politiques, sociales et religieuses, le choix des sujets, dont beaucoup sont tabous, est une question délicate. Loin d’être une simple suite de reproductions, cet ouvrage se distingue par le parti pris d’une organisation thématique. La sélection des images vise à refléter la scène artistique photographique de ces dix dernières années en se démarquant des images emblématiques maintes fois montrées et sans user d’une vision exotique du pays qui exciterait la simple curiosité.

English translation:

This book presents an examination of contemporary Iranian photography. For the first time ever, the work of around forty Iranian photographers is found in one book, revealing to the Western viewer the plurality and vitality of photographic art in Iran.

Iranian photography is defined by the extent to which it engages with the individual and by its political dimension. The work of the artists is rarely politically neutral, and through their photos, the majority aim to denounce social and political injustice, censorship, or even everyday life.

For these photographers, limited by political, social and religious constraints, the choice of subject, many of which are taboo, is a delicate one. Far from being simply a sequence of reproductions, this photo book is defined by the way in which it has been organized thematically. The selection of images aims to reflect the photographic art scene of the last ten years, letting go of traditional Iranian photography, which portrays an “exotic” vision of the country that only intends to stimulate curiosity.
