Nomadic Mongolia #15, courtesy and copyright Elaine Ling
The past week was filled with visual abundance and meetings with many, many very talented photographers from all over the US and beyond. The action took place at two major events over seven days in Portland Oregon. I was a formal portfolio reviewer at this year's PhotoLucida, where I was introduced to a wide variety of very current photographic expression. The photo above is from Elaine Ling of Canada, who won the PhotoLucida judges' first prize for her large-format polaroid work documenting nomads in Mongolia.
Right on the heels of that conference a lot of photographers, professors and photography students invaded Portland for the annual national conference of SPE (Society for Photography Educators). More great work to see, as well as a series of inspiring lectures and slide shows from the famous and not-yet-famous.
All in all, terrific experiences. I'll be sifting through lots of newly discovered good work to accompany an already great line-up of photos, articles and essays for the next two issues of Lens Culture. Check back in early April, or sign up for our mailing list to be notified of new postings and events. You can sign up on the home page. Cheers!
