alexander laurent (rubalcava); b. 1992, Laguna Beach, CA
I’m a first generation American from a Mexican family. I was raised in a deeply religious household in a conservative part of Southern California. When I was 16 years old, I began questioning my faith and left the Mormon church. This created a schism in my familial relationships, and served as the foundation upon which the next decade of my life was built. Though my family name is Rubalcava, I prefer to go solely by my given name of alexander laurent. In the time since I have lived in multiple cities, studied as an apprentice under a number of skilled craftsmen, worked in a myriad of industries and professions, and spent the majority of my time trying to better understand the world around me and our interpersonal relationships as human beings. As I continue to be a student of the world, I hope to be constantly progressing my skills as an artist to raise new questions and present new ideas.
