Size Matters: A Juried Exhibition Celebrating Small Works

Winners will be announced in September 2018

Size Matters is the signature exhibition of the Medium Festival of Photography in San Diego. This is our fourth year presenting a curated selection of works smaller than 10″ (image size only, frames can be up to 16″x20″), and we are proud to partner with LensCulture and Sparks Gallery to host Size Matters from October 20 - November 11, 2018. The juror for Size Matters is Brian Clamp, Director of ClampArt in New York.

Like many connoisseurs of photography, we appreciate the seductive impact of a large photograph, but haven’t lost sight of the unique power found in small photographic prints, and the unique experience in viewing a photograph one person at one time. Our call is open to all subject matters and themes, as long as the image is 10″x10″ or smaller.

Awards and Honors

Juror’s Choice receives: $500 Purchase Award (Work donated to a regional museum collection!)

Director’s Choice receives: VIP Pass to the 2019 Medium Festival

Honorable Mention receives: Gift Package from one of our Festival partners

All selected artists will be listed in the 2018 Medium Festival program. All are welcome to attend the opening reception on Saturday, October 20, 6-9pm.

About the Gallery

The Sparks Gallery is housed within the historic Sterling Hardware Building in San Diego’s vibrant Gaslamp Quarter, located between Island & Market on Sixth Avenue. Sparks Gallery is an event space that features contemporary artwork by artists living in San Diego and Southern California. The Gallery was awarded the 2015 People in Preservation Award for Adaptive Reuse by Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO).

For works sold during the exhibition, artists will receive 50% and the gallery will receive 50%. 10% of sales made during opening night will support the Medium Festival of Photography.

Hanging and Shipping

Works must be shipped to Medium or delivered to Sparks Gallery in person, ready to hang (wire preferred, no sawtooth hangers will be permitted). Artists will be responsible for all shipping expenses related to the showing of their work, including providing adequate packing materials to ensure safe transit inbound and for the return of your artwork. We do not cover insurance for works in transit, and will not assume liability for expenses related to the return of artwork. Items left unclaimed for more than 60 days after the exhibition close date will be considered the property of Medium, and may be kept or disposed of at our discretion.

Sparks Gallery reserves the right to exclude work that is significantly misrepresented from digital files submitted. Photographs included in the exhibition must arrive presentation ready at Sparks Gallery no later than Monday, October 8, 2018. All works included in the exhibition must include return postage through a pre-processed FedEx label with the requisite bar code, or a UPS shipping document. We will return unsold work within two weeks after the exhibition closes.
