Derek Kelly was born and raised in New York City. He is a self-taught photographer. A former U.S. diplomat, he holds a B.A. from NYU in Individualized Studies, M.Phil from the University of Oxford in Classical Archaeology, and J.D. from Brooklyn Law School.
