London-based Lithuanian artist Geiste Marija Kincinaityte (b. 1991) is interested in developing intuitive research strategies and showcasing the self-referential aspects of photography as a medium. Her works are haunted, driven, and even defined by the anticipation of an encounter with the uncanny. An encounter which implies both cessation of a comfort zone — self, human, habit, habitat, milieu — as well as alertness to yet unidentified presence.
In 2013 Geistė has received a BA in Media and Communications (with Photography) from Goldsmiths, University of London, where in 2015 she was also awarded an MA in Film and Screen Studies. In 2014 she was a finalist in the FreshFaced+WildEyed photography contest, which resulted in a group show at The Photographers’ Gallery in London. After she became a winner of Kaunas Photography Gallery Open Call in 2015 and received an artist grant awarded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture, in January 2016 she had her first solo exhibition of You Belong to Me project at the Kaunas Photography Gallery. Since then Geistė has presented this project in Matsumoto (Japan) and it is going to be showcased in three forthcoming group exhibitions in Lithuania and a solo exhibition in London this September.
Geistė's photographic and written works were published in The British Journal of Photography, NYX: a noctournal magazine, Lithuanian Photography: Yesterday and Today '15, a photography annual published by the Lithuanian Photographers Association, Fotografija Nr. 1 (30) magazine published by the Lithuanian Photographers Association, You Belong to Me exhibition catalogue, S.KIN journal, and Tjejland magazine.
