The images in this project are based on periods in art history, paintings, and art movements such as The Dutch Baroque Vanitas or van Gogh and Expressionism. They are not meant to be exact replicas of an original painting but rather a contemporary exploration of who we are today and how we have or have not evolved over the centuries.
The camera is one facet of a more complex intention to create storytelling portraits with drama and nostalgia.
I am a Portrait Photo Artist combining my creativity and technical skills in Photography with Photoshop, Staging, Theatrical Make-up, Lighting, and a background in Art History.
Having lived in Europe including The Netherlands I developed a deep reverence and appreciation for the Dutch Masters of The Baroque Era Golden Age and of course for the unparalleled Vincent van Gogh.
Art is very internal and external at the same time. Living in other countries for many, many years, developing multi-culti friendships, learning languages, and cultural intricacies influences me daily.
I was born in California, my family came from a Greek island that was under Turkey, and I am married to a Dutchman. In The States I lived mainly in San Francisco where I started in the 90's with a mechanical camera shooting black and white film and doing my own darkroom developing and printing.
This was the segue into digital photography and Photoshop and an expansion of creativity.
