I grew up in the small town of Boron in the Mojave Desert. Most of my friends left the town after high school. At the time I was helping support my mother and siblings with a cooking job at a truck stop and going to a junior collage part time an hour away. I felt like a failure and thought I’d be stuck there for the rest of my life.
I did a little photography in high school and enjoyed it. I saved up my bought a used camera and signed up for a photo class. It changed my life. The joy I’d experience when I created an image was addicting. After receiving my AA I was accepted into the San Francisco Art Institute. I had no idea what I was getting into. I graduated in 1999 and started working in the tech industry. I didn’t go into fine art right out of school because of my large student debt. I was tired of living in poverty. I have continued to photograph since graduating.
