Kathryn Mayo grew up in rural Alabama. Influenced by her experience of living on a large soybean farm, her photography is often autobiographical in nature with an emphasis on storytelling. Reaching beyond the realms of “straight” photography and venturing into installation, antique and alternative processes, Kathryn’s work frequently explores the idea of identity and incorporates found materials, fabric, and objects. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is in several permanent collections.
Kathryn attended the University of Alabama, earning a B.F.A. with a concentration in Photography. She earned an M.F.A. from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Kathryn has been teaching photography full time at Cosumnes River College since 2007 where she teaches a broad range of classes in film (all formats), digital imaging, photo history and alternative photographic processes. In 2017, Kathryn won the Alabama Artist award from the Huntsville Museum of Art.
