MAKIKO is a photographer who has lived, studied and worked in Japan, France, North America, Switzerland and UK. She is best known for her black and white photography.
In 2014, after working over six years collaborating with Dr. Landa, Kennedy Krieger Institute, she launched her book “Beautifully Different”. In 2016, it was commercially published in Japan.
In 2015, she was granted rare permission to photograph on Gunkanjima. In 2016, her solo exhibition “Paradise Revisited” was held at London School of Economics.
Late 2016, she visited the uninhabited island of Nozaki to document traces of hidden Christians. Her exhibition “Trails to Prayer” was held at LSE in Spring and during Voies-Off (Arles) in Summer 2017.
The Photographers’ Gallery featured her lunchbox project for “Food for Being Photographed” in summer 2017.
Late 2017, “Paradise Revisited” was exhibited at Bunkamura, Tokyo and Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan. “BATTLESHIP ISLAND” was published by Dewi Lewis Publishing in January 2018.
