As a growing peacebuilder, my desire to understand people's challenges in conflict has led me to learn of their journeys with images that create thoughts we can reflect on. I was first driven to use a camera for a purpose when noticing the contrast between negative images on Somalia, often shot by outsiders, compared to the reality while living there. Instead of working to respond to this narrative, I sought images that the viewer could interact with regarding common views and happenings that fulfil a better balance of views. After observing positive responses of images bringing people closer to reality away from dominant image, I recently wondered if photography can impact peacebuilding efforts, the topic of my recently completed master's thesis. On a daily basis, many experience different types of conflict such as war, natural disasters, political struggles, cultural eradication and others. It is through this lens which I seek to share insights on how our fellow humans face and overcome conflict.
