Marea Reed is a fine art photographer whose work focuses on the narrative. Using primarily natural light and with a belief that it is hard to improve on nature, she likes to tell stories from life, from imagination and most recently, from literature.
Influenced by both great cinematography and the great masters of painting, her work balances both intimacy and context with an enduring goal of emotional connection with the viewer.
Born in Sydney, Australia, she grew up in a family with a love of literature and the written word, and for a long time worked in journalism and film. Film remains one of her great loves and the grand scale it allows permeates her approach to photography.
She says "I am passionate about finding the intangible and putting it in a frame - the interior world of memory, dreams, feeling and the endless yearning of the human condition - and how they are common to us all. I also believe that our surroundings are central to how we view the world, so our relationship to the spaces we inhabit is central to my work."
Marea Reed has exhibited in solo and numerous group shows around Australia, and in the 4th Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography, Berlin. A finalist in multiple prestigious art awards, she was named winner of the Art category in the Top Emerging Photographers of Australasia 2016 by Capture Magazine.
