Without giving away her exact age, Maria Matijasevic (IG @_plantmyheart_) had to develop her first black-and-white photographs on a clothesline in a darkroom. As the technology shifted, she moved to DSLR and then to smartphone camera. Currently she shoots with a Samsung Galaxy 10e and an attachable macro lens. Post-production is minimal, using the phone’s built-in editing tools. Maria uses extreme closeup, shallow depth of field, and aggressive cropping to find mystery and ambiguity in “unremarkable” subjects such as seeds, ice, or buildings. She is frequently featured on Instagram aggregators such as @hiyapapaya @mobiography and @jjcommunity. Her first book of photography, Macro Economy, was released in 2020.
