As a research-based artist, Maria explores mutual interdependence, affective processes, and living conditions through image and text. Rooted in equality–oriented practice and scientific rationality, her work examines established narratives from new perspectives.
Her photographic practice grew out of a documentary project during her mother’s final years – a shared meaning-making process in dialogue with her grandfather, press photographer Harry Lindwall. This experience formed the basis of an ongoing artistic inquiry into how humans relate to one another in vulnerability and care.
The photobook 'En ovikt samling' (An Unfolded Collection) includes the series Circles of Care, from which five images were selected for exhibition at Hasselblad Fotosalong 2025. The work portrays the eternal and often invisible gestures of care that women perform for others. Through the simple yet charged act of making a bed for someone else, an ongoing, often unnoticed emotional labour becomes visible.
With thirty years of experience in psychology – as a lic. psychologist, PhD in psychology, and cert. ISTDP therapist – she brings an in-depth understanding of human processes, learning, creativity, and relational dynamics into her artistic practice. She has also taught and conducted research in psychology, a practice she am glad to continue alongside my artistic work.
She also offers workshops and guidance in creative processes and photography, and writes about photography and existence on the blog On the Photographer's Voice (now in Swedish, soon in English starting April 2026).
