Lazaretto adapts the land- and -sea-scapescape surrounding Lazaretto Creek, just outside Savannah, Georgia, as a case study to examine the history of place and the role of photography in describing a site’s meaning and appearance. This collection of contemporary photographs presented alongside historical research addresses the complexities of time and location. Lazaretto combines contemporary photography, archival research, specimen collecting, and imagination to create a rich and complex view of a specific place, Lazaretto, as it has changed in appearance, function, and meaning over time. Lazaretto is ultimately a memorial for lives lost, and a beacon for stories yet untold, on this complex and weathered landscape where land and river meet sea.
