In Surface Tension, an image emerges from of the remnants of an abandoned one. Frustrated by the tensions I found between analog negative film and the digital scanning process, I discovered that in liberating film from its role as a vessel for photographic memory – by physically altering the negatives, and then re-seeing the folded, crumpled, and sliced surfaces through the scanner’s digital eye – they articulate their simultaneous destruction and rebirth, evoking a spirit image hovering over its latent body.
