Nepal Craft Workers
Project info

The craft workers in Nepal are often from the lower castes, following a long family tradition passed on from generation to generation. Their work is done in simple workshops with the minimum of tools, relying on their hand skills and a deep knowledge of the materials they are working with.

These people rarely - if ever - have their portraits taken - especially not in a formal context in Nepal. Portraiture is the luxury of the higher casts in which their jewelry and fine clothes are shown off.

In this series of portraits I wanted to illustrate the workers in their daily working clothes - where they came from the work they were doing for a few minutes into a makeshift 'studio' in the workshop.

They are highly skilled and proud of the work they do.
