1830's Leather Factories
During 1830 tanneries started to work on Crete. The place that was chosen was next to the sea, in shallow waters, something that was favorable for the first phase of processing. During the 1950’s there were more than 80 tanneries in Chania. Now it’s only six of those that are still working. The atmosphere, smell and sense of time in those places is a unique experience. These photographs were taken in working and abandonded tanneries, during Stella Johnson's "Seeing Crete: A Photo Diary" workshop, as one of her teaching assistants.
