I have played rugby for years, mainly in the third team of my local team, The Dukes. We call each other Boys, not men. The camaraderie and the club culture is a special thing to me. I really enjoy being amongst the Boys, fighting for each other on the field and partying afterwards.
Rugby Union is a small sport in The Netherlands. Our first team, or XV (fifteen players on the starting team), is one of the top teams of the country. A large number of internationally capped players, former, current and future play in their ranks. Yet, the team culture resembles the recreational passion of my own, far less talented mates. A cigarette right after being subbed, peeing in the shower, the odd hazing after scoring your first try, playing your first game or away game.
The team feeling is special, The Boys will never let each other down, on or off the field.
Dukes Victory Song:
We are the boys from The Dukes and we come from Den Bosch,
We only drink whiskey and bottles of rum,
The boys of The Dukes are in town,
jajaja, lalalalalalalala,
We only drink whiskey and bottles of rum,
The boys of The Dukes are in town.
