Project info

These items were found on the beach at the Greek Island of Lesvos near Skala Sikaminea. This place is often called the ground zero of Europe's migrant crisis. The island is situated 12 km away from the Turkish coastline. In 2015, at least 500,000 people had migrated through the island on their way to mainland Europe. The migrants leave behind documents and personal belongings for many reasons.

Many believe that the lack of documents may prevent deportation. This is a belief that the gangs of smugglers foster.
Some of the migrants flee from war zones, but in many cases the reasons for emigration involve human rights violations in their home countries or a lack of opportunities and poor quality of life.
