The wedding is one of the most common rituals, it could be found almost in every culture. It is a symbol of procreation well-being, and love, which everyone can understand. That's why I am so inspired in gathering pieces of different weddings together: I think, it could illustrate, that in spite of religious, national and social background, all of us have so much in common.
However, not only similarities but also differences in the ritual make wedding interesting subject to study. Those details can tell us a lot about each society, especially about the role, which women, family, and traditions play in it.
Now the project consists of Russian, Mari, Old Belivers’, Gypsy, Dagestan and queer weddings, and it is still ongoing.
*At a Russian wedding guests shout "Gorko!" (literally translated as bitterly) to make newlyweds kiss.
