Brutalism polarizes opinion. Not aesthetically pleasing with rough unfinished surfaces and monolith scale dominating the landscape. Burtalism was more than an architectural movement; an idealistic utopia with aspirations for a brighter future and optimism for the post-war period. It is the texture and geometry that is the source of wonder and fascination that captivates my imagination. The endless possibilities for escapism and fantasy recall scenes from books and films. It sets a backdrop for the harsh futurism of George Orwell’s ‘1984’ and ‘Clockwork Orange’ by Anthony Burgess. Despite this it still radiates a sense of optimism and confidence.
