the FLORA series
Hans Silvius is a Fine Art photographer who is primarily intrerested in the way in which photography changes visual reality into photographic images.
For the past few years he has been working with Wet Plate Collodion , an obsolete photographic technique that dates back to 1850.
In the FLORA series he portrays the sheer beauty we can find deterioration and even death of flowers , giving them a new presence and character.
The entire process of choosing the subject matter, composition, sharpness and exposure is kept in tight control. The Wet Plate Collodion process , on the other hand , is somewhat unpredictable.
Shifts in tonality, discoloration , ragged edges, stains , smears , streaks and
splashes appear unexpectedly and are hard to be controlled.
It is the unpredictability and rawness of this process that perfectly suits the
chosen flowers , enhancing their deteriorated appearance dramatically.
