The unsung heroes of SBS Dateline's 2017 documentary Daughter of Sierra Leone
In October 2016 I travelled with Aminata Conteh Biger, Penny Gerstle, and SBS filmmaker Amos Roberts to make a documentary about Aminata's return to Sierra Leone. Aminata was help captive as a slave wife during the civil war until she was rescued by UNHCR. As a result of sexual abuse, when Aminata gave birth to her daughter Sarafina, she nearly died. Aminata made the decision to return to Sierra Leone despite risks to her safety to help mothers and babies where the maternal death rate sees 1 in 17 women die in childbirth, the worst maternal death rate in the world. These images capture some of the unsung heroes of that experience.
