Bicycles are lenses and they enable us to see into a city. In Florence, the bikes are a seamless part of the urban fabric. The bikes have personalities, which often reflect the personality of the rider. In the hands of art students, they become paintings. Some bicycles are meticulously cared for, others are neglected, and many are stolen and repainted. One day while walking the back alleys, I noticed a small truck with iron jaws plucking abandoned bicycles from the streets. I dubbed it the "bike catcher," and I knew that I had to work fast before all the old bikes disappeared.
