Passed yet Present
This series is the result of a visit to Cimiterio dos Prazeres in Lisbon, during the fall of 2016. Taking intimate photos of this special place left me with mixed feelings: was I violating people's private space, even people who were no longer part of our world? My sense of trespassing into their private space told me something different: they are still part of our world, very much so. As they should be. The custom of putting coffins in plain sight added to my uneasy feelings, but at the same time it told me that there's another way than just putting our deceased away, deep under the soil. Maybe this way is actually more telling of the meaning of life and death. Confronting, maybe, but true to life.
