Time in Glass
Dioramas of taxidermy have long fallen from museum fashion in a world saturated with photography and video. But of over a century the 85 dioramas at the Field Museum of Chicago have served as windows into nature for millions of school children and much older visitors. Browse these images of the displays and you can easily still find yourself drawn into the scenes. They're some of the best ever made anywhere. (The storied lions from "The Ghost and the Darkness" are here.)
The images here celebrate the remarkable skill and devotion of several generations of Field Museum staff who have created, maintained, and recently renovated these displays.
