I grew up as a young girl yet I am forced to view representations of the world through what is inevitably a male gaze.
Escaping reality, into the all-encompassing world of the film and television is a simple pleasure most of us enjoy. While being immersed within the frame we project ourselves onto the screen and we see our lives being reflected back to us through the experiences of the character.
Historically film has privileged the male gaze, therefore we are only seeing ourselves through one particular lens. The patriarchal system we live in leads us to see a certain way, the language of film has been built up to condition society to value the appearance of woman thus constraining women's roles within film. Without diverse representations of women there are limitations to how we see ourselves.
