A Time Away
Project info

A Time Away is a study of my family on vacation in upstate New York. I isolated certain members and joined others together when I was composing the images based on my impressions of them. Their true character came out when I foisted my deadpan style upon them, and body language became the only way to read them. I found a stark contrast with the natural environment and their more contemporary notions. More than anything, I wanted to put on display the distance that a camera can put between anyone, even as intimate a relationship as a mother, father, sister or brother. This series was shot entirely on 120mm film.
