Crowned looks at signature architecture and skylines as the jewellery of our global culture. Having photographed in the regions at the forefront of urban growth over many years, I have seen cities scrambling for attention-grabbing architecture to put themselves on the map. This phenomenon, once limited to a few leading world cities, has jumped and accelerated all around the world.
In these photographs local context is minimised. The architecture is emphasised as a global type that is not necessarily interested in local context and culture. Rather it is an architecture of grand objects – brazen symbols of corporate and political power keenly worn by our cities.
This series of photographs seeks to trace the aspiration, boldness and complexity of our global culture in the tech-enabled forms and elaborate facades of its architecture.
