A Painterly Ontology
‘Beautiful’ and ‘Interesting’ are not always used in a positive sense. Their merit, though, may outweigh their pitfalls from certain perspectives. The impossibility of satisfying their demands does not diminish the value of the pursuit. I often use extensive multiple exposures in post-production to pursue painterly, even drawing-like visual dynamics to interpret some of the more subtle and touching themes I encounter or confront. ‘Capturing moments’ has its place, as does deploying the photographic subject matter as the inputs to a more generative, open-ended and exploratory journey.
