The eyes: great orbs of light-reflecting wonder. Their attention and direction arrests and possesses, transports and diverts. The dynamism of eye contact with wild animals is gripping and intangible. Connecting with their gaze unites us for a fleeting moment.
During my time in South Africa, I encountered many different animals in reserves and sanctuaries. As a wildlife photographer, it is important to focus on the eye for a tack sharp image. I perhaps took this too literally as my entire focus for my photography became on the power of the eyes. Eye contact with a wild animal can be a thrilling and at times, moving experience. As we move into a collective future where we sadly encounter fewer and fewer wild animals in their natural habitats, my work aims to bring the viewer closer to the face of the issue of conservation.
