Due to increasing religious influence and modernization, certain cultural rights are being neglected. The Puberty Rights - Dipo which ushers girls into adolescence in the past was a comprehensive training institute that thought girls all they needed to know about womanhood. The training entailed personal grooming, caring for one's environment, nutrition, natural medicine, etiquette, business, relationships and marriage among other pertinent personal development topics.
It was after such rights that adolescents could be considered for marriage. It was also taboo to marry without having gone through such rights. The taboo kept young girls chaste and prevented early pregnancies as the punishment for going contrary to the culture was banishment.
Young girls indigenous to places where these rights are done no longer want to be a part of it lest they be heavily influence by their parents who uphold the culture.
This is the first of an annual my visual study of the dying culture.
