London-based Phillip Prokopiou was born to Greek immigrants in South Africa. The self-taught photographer established a practice in 2014 under the name Studio Prokopiou, co-founded with his partner in life and art Panos Poimenidis. Their work is an exploration of queer theory, self-invention and LGTBQ identity informed by kitsch culture, camp, mythology and art history. Their aim is to capture both the surface and interior world of their subjects; halfway between truth and fantasy, high and lowbrow. The images are the result of an ongoing dialogue between the duo and their subjects. Phillip directs, lights and photographs, while Panos creates the set.
