Rafael Arocha (Gran Canaria/Spain,1978) is a self-taught photographer who lives and works as a freelance in Barcelona.
"Photography keeps me alert.
I am interested in how the image can be interpretted in different ways and how it can have diverse connections to memory and to emotional states. The photographic process allows me to critically and creatively understand and get closer to different situations, feelings and people, learning more about my own thoughts and inner emotions. I believe this process allows the photographer to discover and connect with his/her obsessions, doubts, intellect and memory."
Rafael Arocha was born in Gran Canaria (Spain) in 1978. He lived in London for several years and since 2003 resides in Barcelona. He studied Industrial Relations, career he decided to put aside to pursue photography.
With his work he explores personal and social conflicts related to perception, communication and emotional states. The photographic process allows him to address circumstances and abstract ideas besides providing the opportunity to explore and become familiar with intimate thoughts and emotions.
Although he considers Medianoche (2014) his first book, he has other publications such as Aunque sea un instante (Fotointerpreta Grant, 2009), No Caption I and II (R. Arocha & A. Blanch 2013/2014) and the fanzine Captain Lust & The Romantic Pornographers (TDPapeles, 2014).
In recent years he has also worked in the organization of projects such as Barcelona Magnum Workshops 2009, Al-liquindoi Workshops, Fisheye Photo Meeting portfolio reviews or Trafic Festival of Barcelona. He has as well participated and taught in different courses and photography workshops.
