When I travel around India taking pictures, I am often asked the question where I am from. And I find it hard to explain that it is quite complicated. If I say I am from Pondicherry, then the next question is almost always whether I know French. "But you don't look Tamil?". Then I have to explain that I was actually born in Calcutta. "Oh so yes, you must be Bengali. A lot of people from Bengal come here". I have to then frantically shake my head and say "I was born there, but we speak in Oriya at home". And every time I go through this ritual I am left wondering where am I from actually?
I think photographs don't care so much where you are from, or what language you speak. Photos speak for themselves and take on a life of their own when you put them out in the world.
