A large-format photographer for the past twenty-five years, I've photographed in many of America's iconic national parks, from Yosemite in California to Acadia National Park in Maine. Even though I felt I was making very good photographs during those years, I was constantly searching for my own voice, to create photographs that were unique to the way in which I saw the world. I feel I have accomplished that with my project, Other Worlds. "Depature" is one of my favorites from the project.
For me the irony is that I spent so many years walking in the footsteps of others all over America only to find what I was searching for in my own backyard, a little strip of shoreline no more than a half mile long on Big Talbot Island. There I allowed my imagination to create sea cliffs and craggy spires, rushing rapids and ethereal underworlds, most encompassing only a few square yards or less.
