Stewart’s close attachment to the area he grew up, and now lives, is reflected in the photographs he makes. Locations from around Yorkshire regularly feature in projects exploring place, memory, and the natural and artificial landscape, all with an overarching love for the drama and beauty of natural light. However, these photographs rarely feature archetypal landmarks or the picturesque. Stewart’s work is influenced by the sublime and he presents a sense of emotional drama and captures the forlornness and fragility of his subjects. The carefully composed images are metaphors for a complex emotional landscape.
