Suzanne Stein is a photographer currently based in New York City. She is a former figurative artist originally from Philadelphia who shocked herself by discovering street photography late in life accidentally while on a trip to Europe. With her first camera, she soon began shooting what became a major body of work in Skid Row, Los Angeles. On Skid Row, Suzanne found brutality and beauty as she followed a core group of mesmerizing women as they went about their daily lives.
Her difficult experiences raising her son on her own have heightened her awareness of sensitive social issues. A dedicated photographer who works in an unconventional, ultra realistic, narrative style that resists categorization, her work reflects the underlying urgency and narrative interconnected within the surface of the ultra ordinary. She considers herself a social realist photographer, making images that reflect a raw reality while preserving a strong sense of artistry. She is constantly experimenting with image creation and modes of expression to reflect what she feels drawn to document. She is a former Fujifilm representative and her work has been featured in publications throughout the world.
