Originally from the Netherlands, Tanja Houwerzijl (1971) moved to Japan in 2004 and has not left Asia ever since.
Apart from taking photos of Tokyo’s gritty urban setting, she is very interested in the distinct cultural aspects of Japan’s Society and she collaborates with journalists in Japan to address social issues and current affairs. Her work has been published in articles for Vice, Tempuramag, NRC, Trouw and Humo.
More recently, she developed her visual style into analogue Collage making. These collages consist mostly of vintage Japanese and foreign materials which she collects from Antique markets and bookstores in Japan. Her Collages mostly center around the theme of Japanese women, Tanja uses this as a visual narrative to make more sense of where she lives compared to where she is coming from.
