Walter Segers emigrated from Belgium to Canada in 1993 and currently lives and works in Toronto. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design University in 2008 and received OCADU’s prestigious M.C. McCain Post Graduate Photography Residency in 2009. Segers won the Akin Studio Program which carried a one-year residency at Museum Of Contemporary Art in Toronto in 2018. He has exhibited his photo-based works throughout Canada, and his work has been shown internationally in NYC, Rochester, Mazatlán (Mexico), Paris, Antwerp and Prague. Segers’ work is published in Globe & Mail, ArtWindsor, muse magazine (Canadian Museums Association), PhotoEd as well as the online magazines Wondereur, Frank by The Genteel, and Pixie & Rotter. Segers is an active member of The Throbbing Rose, a queer artists collective. His photo-based works explore issues surrounding gender, sexuality, immigration, identity, and belonging. Segers’ latest project is converting a Long-Term-Care Home wing into a Rainbow Wing for the 2SLGBTQIA+ seniors community in Toronto. He has been working with the LGBTQ archives to design and curate a history and legacy wall featuring the struggles and achievements the rainbow community has gone through.
