Shooting in the dark: Susan Bein's nightpark photos
Night Park 1, © Susan Bein
Susan Bein's painterly night-time photos are romantic and mysterious and fun. We discovered her work when she became one of the finalists in this year's Critical Mass portfolio review competition. We chose just eight photos to introduce her work via Lens Culture. You can find more than 2,800 other photos on her flickr site.

I quite enjoy these photographs--I think they're very beautiful. Playful and eerie at the same time. The colors really make the images. The whole effect was rather ruined, though, when I read her text. It's rather pretentious--condescending and off-putting. I didn't really want to like her photos after I read it. For what that's worth.

Exactly my thoughts, you put it much better than I could however.

I love Susan's photos too - they're such unique takes on the world - so beautiful and mysterious. I also love her text! So funny that others don't. I often really dislike artist's statements too though, and prefer to just look at the work (isn't that the statement, after all?), but I think Susan's is refreshing - poetic without being saccharine and, most importantly, I think she's right on. Her words definitely have a confident air, but her work deserves it. I'm lucky enough to know her, as well, and she's sweet and spunky and a very, very kind person - so I'm sure that infuses how I read her text, too. Anyway, I'm so happy to see Susan represented here! Her work is some of my very favorite right now!
