We first discovered the work of Ali Mobasser after he was named a LensCulture Emerging Talent in 2014. That October, he flew to Barcelona to attend the opening of our exhibition of all 50 Emerging Talents. While there, we had the chance to sit down with him and record this interview, where he revealed more of the story behind his moving, personal work.

In the interview, Mobasser recounts the life narrative of his aunt, Afsaneh Mobasser, who was born in Iran as a young girl of privilege, forced into exile and endured a lifetime of unexpected journeys. This tumultuous story is all told through official government ID photos of her from age 7 to age 55.

Also: be sure to see our original feature of this work to discover even more of Mobasser’s project, “Box 3.”
