Part of our mission at LensCulture is to provide photographers everywhere with opportunities for both creative and professional advancement. With that goal in mind, we’ve compiled this short list of upcoming deadlines that caught our eye for the month of April.

Each month, we will feature our picks for upcoming grants, photo competitions, jobs, and fellowships that seem particularly worthwhile for photographers around the world to consider. The texts below are taken from the organizations’ respective websites. Click on the links for further information.

Photo Competitions & Grants

Kassel Photobook Dummy Award

As part of the FotobookFestival Kassel, a competition will be held for the best unpublished photobook dummy. 50 books will be shortlisted and exhibited in Kassel as well as at other international events. The awardee for first prize will be produced by the publishing house Kettler. Second and third prize will also receive book production vouchers from k-books. Alongside the competition, dummy book reviews will be offered for all who enter.

Aperture Summer Open Call: The Way We Live Now

The Aperture Summer Open is taking submissions for their annual exhibition. The exhibition seeks to highlight key trends within contemporary photography; the theme for 2018 is “The Way We Live Now.” Photographers are encouraged to submit bodies of work that respond to the rapid change in today’s culture, politics, technology and means of self-expression. Submissions can span across any genre. Winners will be selected by a jury of expert editors and critics.

The Royal Photographic Society International Photography Exhibition

Now in its 161st edition, the IPE is a celebration of photography today and continues to offer insight into current trends and subjects while providing a platform for the important photographers of tomorrow. The competition welcomes entries from all genres, styles and approaches by photographers worldwide, at all levels of practice.

In addition to exhibiting in the touring exhibition, selected photographers are eligible for several cash prize awards, totalling £4,250, aimed at supporting future photographic projects. This includes a dedicated award of £1,500 for a photographer under 30 years of age.

Luma Rencontres Dummy Award Book

The Rencontres d’Arles have been offering an award to fund a photographer’s publication of a dummy book since 2015. The prize is open to any new photographer or artist who uses photography in his or her work. The only requirement is to submit an unpublished dummy book. The winner will receive a production budget of €25,000 towards the completion of their project. Special attention will be paid to experimental and innovative forms of publication.

Athens Photo Festival: Open Call for Entries

Athens Photo Festival is one of the leading Southeastern European platforms for photography and is now accepting submissions for their 2018 exhibition program. The festival seeks to bring together emerging as well as established international artists in an open, collaborative manner. This year’s program will be composed of a range of works across all genres of photography, which will be selected through an international open call. The selected artists works will be exhibited from June 6 to July 29 at the Benaki Museum in Athens.

The Inge Morath Award

For the 17th annual Inge Morath Award, The Magnum Foundation and the Inge Morath Estate are pleased to present a $5,000 grant to be given to a female photographer under the age of 30. This is aimed at supporting the completion of a long-term documentary project.

Kuala Lumpur International Photoawards

In celebration of the Kuala Lumpur International Photoawards’ 10th anniversary, a special prize $5,000 will be awarded to one photographer for the most cohesive and original photo story or set of single images. There will be a special focus towards photographers who use the medium in innovative ways. Note that submissions must consist of portraits of people within their environment.

LensCulture Street Photography Awards

For our 4th annual Street Photography Awards, we invite all photographers to submit their visions of life on the street. The competition offers huge exposure not only to our esteemed jury and industry insiders but also to our global audience of over 3 million. Furthermore, winners will have the chance to exhibit their work in Arles, France and will be included in our upcoming photobook, The Best of LensCulture, Volume 3. Finally, we are dedicated to offering creative feedback to photographers everywhere, which is why every person who enters with 5 or more photos is eligible to receive written feedback about their submission.

British Journal of Photography - Portrait of Britain

The British Journal of Photography’s annual “Portrait of Britain” gives photographers the opportunity to have their work exposed to a nationwide audience through JCDecaux bus stop, high street and train station screens. As one of the biggest exhibitions of contemporary portraiture, you will also have the chance to be published in a book put together by Hoxton Mini Press. The project regularly receives plentiful press coverage, meaning photographers can gain career-changing exposure if chosen.

Picture Berlin - Ten Day Program
Berlin, Germany

Geared towards artists who are ready to take the next step in their career, Picture Berlin offers a dynamic program for resident-artists to take part in portfolio reviews, artist talks and tours of the city. The aim is to help artists in their professional development and in making connections, not only in Berlin but beyond.

Rezo Academy - Mentoring and Coaching Programme
Warsaw, Poland

The Rezo Academy and Artist in Bloom, in collaboration with Instytut Fotografii Fort, has composed a six month program tailor-made for professional photographers who are seeking to take their careers to the next level. The program will give photographers the opportunity to work on their ongoing projects with some of the most esteemed experts in the field of photography.

Magnum Workshop with Peter van Agtmael
Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Award-winning Magnum photographer Peter van Agtmael will be guiding a three-day workshop alongside key industry professionals from Magnum and LensCulture in Amsterdam. The workshop will help students take their projects to the next level and develop their portfolios. The collaborative masterclass is aimed at supporting every participant by helping them contextualize their work within a wider audience and environment.

FORMAT - Portfolio Review
Derby, UK

FORMAT portfolio reviews are a great opportunity to have your work reviewed by both national and international experts in the field. With experts from organizations such as the Guardian, Foam, Magnum, Source Magazine, and more, these face-to-face meetings offer the chance to get crucial feedback on your work. These reviews are aimed at committed photographers, who have a developed and serious approach to their work. Recent graduates are also welcome to attend.

Foto Image - Photography Workshop
Across Cuba

Foto Image presents a ten-day travelling workshop across Cuba, a thrilling opportunity to discover the island. From Havana to Trinidad, t aim of the trip will allow travelers to use photography as a medium for educational exchange and cultural exploration. The workshop will also include a tutorial with Fulvio Bugani, an award-winning Italian photographer.

Festivals

World Press Photo Festival
Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Discover the world’s best visual journalists! The World Press Photo Festival will be taking place at Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek for the first time this year. Over two days, the festival will present a diverse program of presentations, workshops and meet-ups from the world’s top photojournalists, documentarians, and photo editors. Alongside the festival at Westergasfabriek, an exhibition of all the winning work (including multimedia projects) will be held in Amsterdam’s De Nieuwe Kerk. This exhibition will mark the start of an extensive world tour of this year’s award-winners.

Belgrade Photo Month
Belgrade, Serbia

Belgrade Photo Month is an annual showcase of regional as well as international photography that hopes to put Belgrade on the photography map. Run by a small and passionate team, the festival aims to give visibility to inspiring work from Serbia and beyond. Join us for exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and much more.

Kyotographie Photography Festival
Kyoto, Japan

The Kyotographie International Photography Festival will hold its 6th edition this year, showcasing thirteen exhibitions around the theme “UP.” The theme invites the audience to look around and see the world anew in the hopes of generating a new, positive towards ourselves and each other. The four-week festival will take place in venues across the picturesque city of Kyoto, that retain its original scenography spread across the city.
