About Alie Woolf

I am an emerging artist based in Montreal. I am a sociologist, translator and writer first and foremost. I came to photography through years of research and study of arts and culture - as part of a Ph.D. in documentary research /creation conducted at UQAM/NYU, amongst other things.

I spent years working and writing as a scholar on the visual cultures and landscapes of cities. Yet it took me 10 years before it occurred to me that the photographer's eyes, could be my own.

I then decided to pause my scholarly activities and dedicated the two last years to developing my own artistic practice - putting forward endeavors of my own. I am completely self-taught - and still have a lot to learn. Side Walks was realized throughout the span of a year - a particularly difficult year of my life I spent isolated, morning and grieving, from the frozen days of winter to the dog days of summer. Such introspective solitude, casted in the settings of the northern American cities I inhabit, reflects in the meditative nature of the Side Walks series.

Side Walks is the first photography series I ever submitted to anyone or anywhere to this date.
