In the Album series, Uriarte investigates a subject that has powered photography from its very earliest beginnings—yet one that has often been relegated to the amateur sphere—the family album.

In these seemingly benign photos, the author introduces us to a new visual dimension, that of faceless memory. By careful editing himself out of family photos, the effects of time and the distortions of memory take on a twilight-zone quality. As a result of this simple action, normal scenes, every day recollections, are approached in a wholly new way.

Editor’s Note: Jon Uriarte’s work is part of “Photography 2.0”, a fantastic exhibition among many in the program of
PHotoEspana 2014. The festival is running in locations all over Madrid from June 4 - July 27, 2014.
