Photo Competitions & Grants
BigPicture encourages photographers from around the world to enter this competition, which aims to celebrate and illustrate the rich diversity of life on Earth and inspire action to protect and conserve it through the power of imagery.
Chaired by award-winning conservation photographer Suzi Eszterhas, this competition welcomes high-quality nature, wildlife and conservation images and is open to all photographers around the world. Enter your nature, wildlife and conservation images for a chance to win cash prizes and be exhibited at the California Academy of Sciences.

The $3,000 prize from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University honors the best documentary writing and photography in alternating years. The focus is on current or recently completed work (within the last two years). This year’s prize is for photography. The 2016 prize was won by Jessica Eve Rattner for her series ”House of Charm.” The 2018 winner’s work will be placed in the Archive of Documentary Arts at the Rubenstein Library, Duke University.

The Prix Elysée is a prize supporting artistic production in the field of photography. Administered by the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland), the prize offers financial help and curatorial guidance to artists with a passion for photography and books, so they can take a decisive step in their career. The Prix Elysée is open to mid-career photographers or artists from around the world. They must be recommended by a reputed professional in the fields of photography, contemporary art, cinema, fashion, journalism or publishing. There is no imposed theme or preference for any particular photographic genre or technique. Eight nominees are selected by the Musée de l’Elysée based on their entry portfolios. Each will receive a contribution of CHF5,000 towards the initial presentation of an original project. The winner, chosen by an international jury, will receive CHF80,000 to produce his/her project and publish a book.

Enter one of the most prestigious competitions for creativity in photography, the Communication Arts Photography Competition. Any photograph first published or produced from March 2017 through March 2018 is eligible. Selected by a nationally representative jury of distinguished designers, art directors and photographers, the winning entries will be distributed worldwide in the Communication Arts Photography Annual, in print and digital editions, and on commarts.com, assuring important exposure to the creators of this outstanding work.

Astro-photographers of all skill levels are invited to submit their best images to the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2018. The overall winner will receive £10,000. Entrants can submit up to 10 images for the chance to win cash prizes, have their winning image displayed in an exhibition at the National Maritime Museum, receive a year’s subscription to Sky at Night magazine, and a copy of the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2019 publication.

Since 1985, this competition has provided artists from all over the world a unique opportunity to present their art to an international audience in New York City’s famed Chelsea art district. Prizes (valued at $70,000) include cash awards, participation in a NYC exhibition, magazine profiles, promotional opportunities, and much more. A panel of jurors with varied backgrounds in the art industry will be reviewing all entries in this search of great talent.

At the heart of Les Rencontres d’Arles, on view from July to September, the Voies Off Festival proposes an alternative program focused on a new generation of artists and photographers. Voies Off is dedicated to supporting new photographic work by photographers with the highest rigour and the best quality. If you are selected for the Voies Off Awards, you will receive several benefits: your work will be shown at one of the premiere events for photography; you will meet some of the best experts and build your network; and you will experience an extraordinary human experience, composed of warm encounters, sharing, and exchange.

The Foam Talent Call is one of the most prestigious international open calls for photographers between the ages of 18 and 35. Over the past decade, the Talent Call has helped launch the careers of numerous talents around the world by giving their work the exposure and recognition it deserves.

The Houston Center for Photography (HCP) proudly holds a call for entries for its Annual Juried Membership Exhibition. Juried by an internationally acclaimed specialist in the field, members’ work is selected for exhibition in the HCP galleries. Three juror commendations will receive an honorarium of $1,000.

We’re excited to announce that for the latest edition of #FotoRoomOPEN we’ve joined forces with Format, a fantastic service to build and maintain an online portfolio website tailored to the needs of creative artists. The winner of #FotoRoomOPEN | Format edition will receive a $1,000 award. We’re also very happy that an enthusiastic photography advocate like Andy Adams has accepted our invitation to jury the call and assign the award.

The “Prix de la Photographie, Paris” (Px3) strives to promote the appreciation of photography, to discover emerging talent, and introduce photographers from around the world to the artistic community of Paris. A selection of work from this competition is displayed in Paris and the winners are published in the PX3 Annual Book. Juried by leading editors, publishers, curators, gallery owners, consultants, creative directors, and art directors, PX3 brings the best of photography from across the globe to Paris.

The call for entries to the International Photography Exhibition (IPE) has now been announced—welcoming entries from all genres, styles and approaches by photographers worldwide, at all levels of practice. Now in its 161st edition, the IPE is a celebration of photography today and continues to offer insight into current trends and subjects whilst providing a platform for the photographers of tomorrow.
In addition to exhibiting in the touring exhibition, selected photographers are eligible for several cash prize awards, totalling £4,250, aimed at helping to support future photographic projects. This includes a dedicated award of £1,500 for a photographer under 30 years of age.

Portfolio Reviews, Workshops & Residencies
Visual Storytelling with Emin Özmen
Improve your visual storytelling skills with Magnum Photos nominee Emin Özmen and his long-term collaborator Cloé Kerhoas, picture editor at Le Journal, at the Magnum Photos Paris office. During this unique three-day multimedia workshop, a small group of up to 20 students will work in close collaboration with this award-winning duo. Places will be allocated based on the quality of submitted portfolios.

BMW Photography Residency
If you’re a photographer and are interested in gaining some notoriety as well as learning a thing or two, BMW’s collaboration with famed Paris Art School Gobelins might be just what the doctor ordered. BMW is currently looking for photographers interested in gaining a residency at the art school. According to BMW, the Residency is a “carte blanche,” dedicated to photographic innovation and transmission, offered to emerging contemporary talents.
The artist will receive a grant of €6,000 and accommodation in Paris, if necessary, for the three months in Residency at Gobelins. A selection of images produced during the Residency will be exhibited at the Rencontres d’Arles and at the Paris Photo Fair in November.

The Portfolio Review at the Palm Springs Photo Festival is designed to introduce emerging, professional and serious advanced amateur photographers to key influencers from both the commercial & fine art realms. We bring together an amazing and diverse group of experienced professionals from magazines, ad agencies, museums, galleries, institutional exhibition spaces, book publishers, reps, consultants and others for you to show your work to.
Unlike other review events, the PSPF Portfolio Review program allows all approved registrants to CHOOSE the reviewers of their choice until our extended deadline of April 20th or when the program is sold out, whichever is sooner.
Reviews run from May 7-10, 2018
