In celebration of the ongoing LensCulture Street Photography Awards 2016, we will be publishing a series of inspiring features on great contemporary street photography. Enjoy!
“Tokyo is Yours” is an ongoing project which I started at the beginning of 2015. It is inspired by manga, printmaking and film noir. It is set in Japan in the aftermath of the Great East Earthquake of 2011.
When making the work, I looked for fantasy, the absurd and metaphor in reality. Through the photographs, I explore the layers between things, as well as memories, human connection, fear and escapism.
Interpretations of the work are open. The series asks questions because I cannot provide easy answers. I sense a massive shift taking place in politics, economics and the environment: we are a danger to the planet but we are much more a danger to ourselves. If we want humanity to continue, things will need to shift.
I strive to use visual narrative to question our relationship with the world and with each other.
