In 2016, coverage of the crisis in Venezuela was becoming one-note. Then independent photojournalist Meridith Kohut, who has been based in the country for 10 years, received a call from The New York Times International Picture Editor David Furst: “I think Venezuela is an underreported story. I think there’s more there.”
